Why I Lead

Joe Happe’s leadership, advocacy and support has helped shape Catholic Charities into a strong organization committed to empowering individuals and strengthening families.

Joe was first introduced to Catholic Charities through his parish and he became more involved after participating in activities held by the Social Concerns Committee at St. Francis of Assisi parish in West Des Moines, Iowa. Through these activities, he learned more about the programs Catholic Charities offers and the impact they have on those in need. He and his wife, Betsy,  soon became donors to support the vital work being done through the organization.

“On a parish level, we weren’t able to do the very important things like what the Emergency Family Shelter, Food Pantry or Counseling programs do,” said Joe. “That is what really got me interested in Catholic Charities and my wife and I felt that by contributing financially we were able to extend on what we were doing through the Social Concerns Committee.”

“As a donor, it is very comforting to know that our contribution is going directly to those who need it rather than to some extreme overhead,” said Joe.

Joe joined the Catholic Charities Board of Directors in 2012 and served for nine years. During his time, he helped the organization grow and move forward. He also helped support, uplift and acknowledge the needs and efforts of the Catholic Charities’ team and the important work they do every day.

“When I was asked to join the Catholic Charities Board of Directors I was thrilled,” said Joe. “My favorite part was seeing the impact people’s financial support, in-kind donations and volunteer work have on the individuals in our communities who really need the help.”

“I was able to meet the people who were providing the services directly [Catholic Charities’ staff and volunteers] and I got to witness those who were being impacted by Catholic Charities’ programs and that was very rewarding,” said Joe.

Looking ahead, Joe knows Catholic Charities will continue to grow and expand to meet the modern day needs clients face. He encourages others to learn more about the work being done at the organization and to get involved however they can.

“It is very rewarding to be involved with Catholic Charities,” said Joe.
