Helping Hands: Ashley Sgroi
Putting faith to action is one thing that Ashley Sgroi, middle school religion teacher at St. Augustin’s Catholic School in Des Moines, models for her students every year.
From a young age, Ashley developed a great love for volunteering. Growing up in Maryland, she would serve alongside her family and parish, even volunteering with Catholic Charities of Baltimore. That passion continued as she moved to Iowa for college and has carried over into her professional life.
“Part of my job as a religion teacher is to keep track of service hours and to help provide students with service opportunities,” said Ashley. “I thought Catholic Charities, Diocese of Des Moines, would be a great place to see if there was anything for students.”
Ashley got connected with Catholic Charities, and a beautiful partnership was formed. In early 2024, 5th grade students put together hygiene kits that were handed out to clients at the Catholic Charities Food Pantry. Later that year, all of St. Augustin Middle School’s students spent time harvesting produce for the food pantry at Iowa Gardening For Good. Most recently, Ashley and other St. Augustin teachers spent an afternoon volunteering at the Catholic Charities Emergency Family Shelter.
She explains that seeing her students connect the work they do with the real impact it has on others is eye-opening for them. Ashley is grateful to share these experiences with her students and fellow teachers.
“I’ve been very fortunate that part of my job involves service, and I get to serve with my students,” said Ashley. “That’s what I enjoy.”
“I want my students to realize that even at their age, they are able to help and make a difference,” she added.
Ashley has also invited staff from Catholic Charities to speak to her classes about the organization’s mission and the work being done to support those in need.
“It’s important for the students to learn about,” said Ashley. “My goal is to try and make sure they understand that our faith teaches that we should show the love of Christ in both our words and actions.”
Ashley encourages others to get involved with Catholic Charities and learn more about the programs and services being offered. She also urges other teachers to reach out and get connected.
“Catholic Charities offers so many wonderful resources,” said Ashley. “I don’t think people realize just how diverse the organization is in the ways people can help.”
Whether it’s by yourself or with a group, volunteering with Catholic Charities is a powerful way to make an impact. For more information on how to get involved, contact Director of Development and Marketing, Bobbi Jo Smith at 515-237-5064 or bsmith@catholiccharitiesdm.org.
