The Catholic Charities Food Pantry renovations are complete, following a car accident that left major structural damage.

The Catholic Charities Food Pantry, located at 1815 Hubbell Ave., Des Moines, provides essential assistance for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Situated in one of Des Moines’ most underserved neighborhoods, the food pantry serves thousands of individuals who rely on it to meet their basic needs.

In March 2025, a car accident caused significant damage to the part of the food pantry that distributes a three-day supply of food for eligible families. During the renovation process, the Catholic Charities Food Pantry adapted its operations to ensure clients continued receiving services.

Fareway Stores, Inc., generously contributed time and resources to support the rebuild. Fareway helped design a new supermarket-style layout, enhancing the client experience and allowing families to shop with dignity. The grocery chain also donated shelving.

“We are extremely grateful to Fareway for helping create a warm and welcoming space for our clients,” said Catholic Charities Food Pantry Manager Deborah Kesling. “After operating at limited capacity since March, we are excited to return to full operations.”

“We are pleased to support the Catholic Charities Food Pantry and the important work it does to combat food insecurity in our community,” said Mike McCormick, Chief Retail Officer at Fareway.

The Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC), a long-time partner of the Catholic Charities Food Pantry, provided multiple wire racks during the renovation to ensure food could be stored safely after the accident damaged the pantry’s original shelving. In addition, DMARC donated a new refrigerator to support ongoing operations.

“The support we received from DMARC allowed us to continue serving our clients while we worked to rebuild,” said Kelyn Anker, Director of Programs at Catholic Charities.

In the last 12 months, the Catholic Charities Food Pantry fed more than 21,000 individuals through its monthly operations and distributed over 120,000 bags of food through its daily window. The food pantry is a member of the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry Network and partners with Food Bank of Iowa. In addition to food, the pantry also provides personal hygiene items, diapers, wipes, formula and pet food to those served.
